FAQs

FSAs and HSAs allow you to pay for eligible out-of-pocket health care costs using pre-tax dollars you set aside.

If your doctor recommends weight loss for a specific health condition (including, but not limited to, obesity, hypertension, or heart disease), you may be able to use HSA or FSA funds to purchase a Profile membership and monthly coaching.

In general, you may not purchase Profile food, beverages, or other merchandise with HSA or FSA funds. Under Internal Revenue Service (IRS) guidelines, these are classified as items that are normally consumed to satisfy nutritional needs and are not FSA/HSA eligible medical expenses.

  1. Once your doctor recommends weight loss for a specific condition, talk to your doctor about obtaining a letter of medical necessity.
    a. Follow this link to view a sample letter of medical necessity.
    b. Submit the letter to your HSA/FSA provider and keep a copy for your records.
  2. Purchase your Profile membership
    a. How you do this will depend on your HSA/FSA provider.
    b. If you have a HSA/FSA card, you can pay with that. Keep your receipt for your records.
    c. OR pay up front for your membership and submit the receipt (which will be emailed to you) for reimbursement.
  3. The claim processes vary HSA/FSA provider, so please check with your provider or HR representative for details.

You may be able to get reimbursed for the expense. Contact your HSA/FSA plan administrator or HR representative to understand the reimbursement process. You will probably need your receipt and a letter of medical necessity, as described above.

If your benefits expire at the end of the year, you have until December 31 at 11:59 p.m. ET to purchase a membership with your FSA dollars for the current calendar year. Confirm with your FSA provider for details on your plan.

Take this letter to your doctor to fill out. It verifies that your Profile membership and monthly coaching is being used to lose weight for a certain medical condition. It is an IRS requirement.
