5 Foods to Toss as You Declutter Your Pantry for Success

Decluttering is all the rage these days thanks to the popularity of Marie Kondo. While you are decluttering your life go ahead and dd your pantry to the cleaning list! Doing so can help you throw away items that may be holding you back on your healthy journey. Here are 5 foods you should consider tossing for healthier eating habits:

1. Out with the old, in with the new

Chips, soda, candy – these foods can often sabotage your attempts at weight loss. It’s much easier to give into temptation when it’s staring you in the face, so toss them and replace them with healthier options. Some great choices are air-popped popcorn or unsalted nuts. If someone in your family insists on keeping these not-so-great snacks around, rearrange your pantry so healthier options are placed in the front.

2. Easy Eats

Boxed dinners can be handy in a pinch, but most are packed with sodium and additives. Instead, stick to the fridge and toss together a healthy salad or stir-fry in minutes.

3. Some Cooking Oils

It can be hard to know which cooking oils to use. Try to avoid using soybean or palm oils, and instead stock your pantry with those rich in unsaturated fat like canola, safflower, avocado, almond, and grapeseed oils.

4. Canned Fruits and Vegetables

Though they’re healthier than most things in your pantry, canned fruits and veggies often contain preservatives, added sodium, or added sugar. Always opt for fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. If you still prefer to buy canned, look for reduced-sodium and “no sugar added” varieties.

5. Sugary Kid Snacks

Growing kids often get hungry between meals. However, many packaged snacks for kids are often full of things like added sugars and artificial ingredients. Swap out sugary breakfast cereals, granola bars, and fruit snacks for fresh fruit, trail mix, and yogurt. Another yummy snack is celery with peanut butter and raisins! “Ants on a log” is a fun way to get your kiddo to eat a vegetable.
